All the girls and women use them every day, or at least once a week. However, we often forget that incorporating them into our daily routines means that they need care, cleaning and maintenance too. Not a typical and the most important part of the house cleaning routine, but taking care of the hair styling tools and accessories is important too. A hair-spray coated curling iron or a gunky brush? Well, these not only don’t look their best, but also are less effective when not maintained in good condition, so here are a few simple ways to maintain your hair tools and accessories clean and tidy.

Brushes, combs and picks

Brushes and combs are what most of us use on a daily basis, because of that they require a bit more regular care and cleaning routine that is simple and fast enough, but efficient too. Start with picking out all the hair that is collected in between the bristles. Want to do that quickly? Then use a comb, because with a comb you can work with bigger areas, catch more strands at once and reach all the areas that are otherwise hard to reach with your fingers only. Once the hair is gone, you may notice some build up at the base of the bristles and here is how to remove that – use an old toothbrush to gently scrub the bristles, combs and picks with warm water and a few drops of shampoo. A shampoo is safe enough to use if for your hair tools too and still enough effective to clean any build-ups and residue from styling products left.

Curling irons, flat irons and rollers

Before starting with any cleaning routine, make sure that the electrical devices are unplugged and they are cool before start touching them, otherwise, you risk to burn yourself badly. Hairspray and other styling hair products residue are easy to notice and easy to build up sticky. You can easily get rid of it by using some rubbing alcohol on a paper towel and rub. If there are some stubborn and really annoying areas, use an old toothbrush to scrub away the sticky residue. When you are done and all the residue is gone, then clean up and wipe down with a clean, damp cloth, then let it dry completely before using it.

Elastics, non-fabric hairbands, other washable accessories

Well, throwing away the old and dirty ones and going out to buy new ones is not a problem, but this is not the point of owning and using hair accessories, because you can easily keep them in good condition. If you wear headbands to the gym, you clean the house with them, you sleep with them and you sweat in them, then you probably know how dirty and nasty these can get. However, it is easy to deal with the situation, because the only thing you need to do is filling the bathroom sink with warm water and a few shampoo drops and let the washable accessories soak for a few minutes. Then gently scrub each of them with your fingers to loosen the dirt and any grease build-up and rinse with clean water.
